Zoo hopes for first cubs in 25 years
BLACKPOOL Zoo is hoping for the patter of tiny lion paws!
Keepers at the award-winning attraction have begun introducing the new young male lion, Wallace, to the zoo's three lionesses as part of the African Lion Breeding Programme.
It is hoped that all four will be living together by the end of the year and Blackpool Zoo will have its first lion cubs in 25 years in 2009!
Two-year-old Wallace arrived from Longleat Safari Park earlier this summer and has settled into his new surroundings.
He was first introduced to the oldest lioness, Gillian and they spent a week together before he met Rachel; he is expected to meet with the youngest lioness, Jasmine, in the next few weeks.
Jude Rothwell, PR and Marketing Executive at Blackpool Zoo, said: "We are slowly introducing Wallace to our three lionesses and so far he has spent one week with Gillian and some time with Rachel. Rachel gave Wallace a bit of a hard time and asserted her authority - she started chasing him round and showing him her claws.
"Once they have all settled down, we will introduce him to our youngest lioness, Jasmine and this will complete the 'Pride of Blackpool'.
"Lions breed successfully in British zoos, so we are hopeful that before long, we will have lion cubs at Blackpool Zoo for the first time in 25 years. It would be fantastic!"
