Wyre joins forces with Blackpool to patrol local beaches
Visitors to Wyre's Waterfront can look forward to a safer summer thanks to a new pact with neighbouring Blackpool Council.
An agreement has been piloted for the 2009 summer bathing season which will see Blackpool Council's Beach Patrol patrolling the beaches at Cleveleys and Fleetwood on behalf of Wyre's Waterfront Team.
Patrols will take place when the beaches are at their busiest (during weekends from the end of May until early July and then daily during school holidays) to ensure the safety of bathers by keeping them informed of local conditions and hazards, and helping people in potential danger.
The aim of the pilot is to build upon the local beach patrolling services already in place as the neighbouring councils regularly work closely together on beach safety issues thanks to their coastal proximity.
It is part of Wyre Borough Council's wider plans to enhance the Waterfront as they seek to achieve The Quality Coast Award accreditation next year.
Wally Mitchinson, Waterfront Development Manager said: "We have been working informally with Blackpool's Beach Patrol Service for many years and have always been very impressed with the strength of their operation and capabilities, so we were pleased to call on their expertise to help us.
Together, we can deliver a professional service this summer to the people of Wyre and our visitors. If the pilot project is as successful as we hope, we look forward to establishing a longstanding relationship with Blackpool."
Terry Rogers, Head of Seafront Operations from Blackpool Council, added Wyre Council has always taken a responsible attitude towards beach safety and have strived to improve the service year on year.
We have been very happy to offer support and guidance. Our beaches meet at Cleveleys and we now have patrols operating along the new seafront there and at the beach opposite Marine Hall Fleetwood.
We've already had a great response from the public.
"Working together with Wyre council allows for an un-broken beach safety initiative along a big part of the Lancashire coast."
