Schools across Lancashire and the Lake District compete for £5000 prize in airport centenary celebrations

Secondary schools across Lancashire and the Lake District are being asked to "Reach for the Skies" to celebrate Blackpool International Airport's centenary year.

Blackpool International has pledged a £5000 prize to the school which comes up with the winning design for a commemorative plaque based on the theme, "100 Years of Flying from Blackpool".

The plaque will be unveiled at a special ceremony at the airport on 18th October 2009 - exactly 100 years since flying first began in Blackpool and the resort hosted Britain's first official air show attracting more than 200,000 spectators.

Susan Kendrick, Customer Relations & Communications Manager at Blackpool International has been writing to schools from across Lancashire and Cumbria to encourage teachers and pupils to take part.

Sue explained: "To mark this unique and historic occasion, we have decided to launch this exciting art and design competition with schools across Lancashire and the Lake District.

Blackpool's place in British aviation history is well known, and we hope that as many schools as possible will compete for this fantastic prize and become part of the next 100 years of flying at Blackpool.

The competition will be judged by David Kershaw, Blackpool International's Chief Executive, Simon Couchman, Blackpool International's Creative Director from award winning design agency ICG, and the manufacturer of the plaque.

If your school would like to get involved in this fantastic competition, simply email Sue at info@blackpoolinternational.com to register your interest.  The closing date for entries is 20th July.  The winner will announced by Friday 18th September, with the official unveiling taking place on 18th October 2009.

The plaque design should be no bigger than 40cm in diameter and can be in colour or black and white.  The material chosen to produce the plaque will be dependent on the design.
