MASSIVE CLEAN UP FOR CLEVELEYS BEACH
Residents living along North Promenade/Rossall Promenade at Thornton-Cleveleys are so fed up with the appalling condition of the beach and promenade that they have set up a residents association to improve the environment for residents and visitors.
The association was set up last August and has already proved to be very successful in working closely with the district council, county council, Lancashire Police and other agencies together with local and national businesses.
Our next project is a community beach clean which is scheduled for Monday 30th March commencing at 9:30 am involving dozens of residents, local primary school children and Princes Trust volunteers. We have been successful in obtaining a Green Partnership Award and a B&Q One Planet Living Grant to enable us to purchase tools, equipment and safety gloves for all the volunteers. This project will not only make a significant improvement to the condition of the beach at Cleveleys for both residents and visitors to the area but will also get the local community involved in environmental improvement projects and develop awareness and educate on environmental issues.
Recent achievements of the association in the last 6 months include:
Improvements to the Environment:
1. Two new sets of concrete beach access steps have been cast on site complete with new and safe hand rails.
2. The benches have been refurbished and painted.
3. Two new dog bins have been placed beyond the five bar gate. Replacement dog and litter bins are on order and due to be fitted around Easter time.
4. The promenade walkway has been cleaned up and is being swept regularly.
5. New toilet signs have been supplied.
6. New ‘No Overnight Parking’ signs have been fitted.
7. Work has started to repair the groynes.
8. Dog Poo posters are in the sign boxes on the new promenade, and we have had a number of letters and articles in the local press.
9. Petitioned Cleveleys Forum and made a presentation for their support in repairs to roads and pavements.
10. Petitioned LCC to request that repairs be made to the roads and pavements.
11. Met with Tobias Ellwood MP, Shadow Tourism Minister, and Paul Maynard, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, to highlight the poor state of repair of our promenade and raise awareness of our campaign to improve it.
Anti-Social Behaviour and Safety:
1. We have been successful in having a plan approved and funded through Lancashire Locals which will see the promenade being re-directed down Thornton Gate and an outbuild created against the promenade wall to slow the traffic down. This is one of the first significant local projects to be funded through this mechanism.
2. The police are to conduct a ‘purge’ on people who are parking overnight in contravention of the by law. This is to be carried out when the nights are lighter and the weather warmer.
3. A ‘golden river’, the two black lines across the road which monitor traffic speed, are to be fitted when the weather improves, to monitor and measure the extent of the racing.
4. We are in negotiations with Wyre Borough Council to have a CCTV camera installed on Rossall Promenade. The type of camera and cost/funding of it are being discussed.
