Mike Clark put the home side ahead after 15 minutes against the run of play before Sphinx levelled three minutes before the break from a Jack Cudworth header.
Sean Paterson bagged his 20th goal of the season in the 51st minute from the penalty spot after Ged Smith had been dragged down inside the area, before Chris Harris sunk Kirkham's hearts six minutes from time with an equaliser after he came on as a sub.
Tom Maguire put Sphinx in the driving seat on the stroke of half-time of extra-time with a well taken goal before Mark Wane chipped in the equaliser and his 21st of the season nine minutes from time after the Coventry 'keeper spilled a Matt Walwyn strike..
In a game watched by more than twice the previous record at Kellamergh Park (1,093) the two sides will have to do it all again next Saturday at Sphinx Drive.
