Kirkham camera shops 6,000 motorists
KIRKHAM has been playing host to one of the highest-earning speed cameras in the country.
The temporary camera - on the busy A583 near Lea, is one of the seven top-earning cameras in the British Isles.
It caught out more than 6,300 motorists driving over the speed limit - netting the government more than £360,000 in the process.
A spokesman for the Department of Transport said: "While these figures seem high, it must be pointed out that each and every motorist involved was breaking the law. These cameras are there for the protection of motorists and pedestrians - not just to create another revenue stream. The money collected will be ploughed back into more traffic-calming measures."
The camera has also left another legacy though - around 18,000 penalty points on drivers' licences.
An enormous £2.7 million was raked in by the top seven cameras in the country - helped by more than £1 million from the top-earner in Staffordshire.
