Gearing up for Fleetwood Cycling Festival

Gearing up for Fleetwood Cycling Festival

Fleetwood is gearing up for its second annual cycling festival.

Taking place on Sunday 13 June, it's a celebration of everything on two wheels, the highlight being a guided family bike ride along Wyre's waterfront. And it won't cost you a penny farthing.

The free family fun at Marine Gardens includes BMX stunts, vintage bikes, unicyclists, a circus big top and the chance to climb into the saddle of some unusual cycles. Youngsters can also dip into the craft boxes to bling their bikes for prizes.

There's plenty of practical information to be had, whether you're a new starter or an experienced rider - everything from details of local cycling shops and keeping your bike secure, to the Wheels for All project which provides free hire of specially adapted bicycles to people with mobility problems.

Main focus of the day is an eight-mile guided ride from Fleetwood to Cleveleys and back, setting off at 11am and again at 2pm. It's suitable for all ages and abilities and everyone who participates will receive a commemorative T-shirt. There's also a four-mile mini ride setting off at 12.30pm and 3pm, as well as a toddlers' ride around the gardens at 1pm.

Participants are advised to wear helmets and appropriate footwear for safety and comfort. Numbers are limited and you will need to register at the Marine Hall on the day to take part.

Fleetwood Cycling Festival, running from 11am to 4pm, has been organised by Wyre Borough Council, as part of its pledge to encourage healthier lifestyles, in collaboration with Pennine Events Ltd of Barnoldswick and Lancashire County Council.
