Garstang Walking Festival is launched in Wyre
On Friday 7 May, the Mayor of Wyre and Mayor of Garstang teamed up with Lancashire Wildlife Trust Chief Executive Ann Selby and local walkers to launch the 2010 Garstang Walking Festival.
Guests and local people were entertained by children from St Thomas`s CE and SS Mary Michael RC Primary Schools who danced traditional Lancashire clog and maypole dances in Cherestanc Square.
Rising to the challenge set down at last year's event, Wyre Borough Council's Director of Leisure and Tourism, Tom Pridmore, donned clogs, breeches, flowers and bells to dance with the children to mark the launch of this year's event.
Tom explained: "At last year's event, I was challenged to join in with the dancing and declined, but without thinking I promised to participate next time. A year has gone by and people have not forgotten, so I ended up practicing with Barry and Brenda Parker, who teach the dances in local schools, and they have been helping me prepare for the big event. I felt that taking part was not only an opportunity to promote the festival but also to raise money for deserving local popular charities, including the Ghana Koforidua community and Garstang in Bloom.
Tom added: "I was particularly keen to raise funds for the dance kits worn by local school children during public displays. I noticed that the children were having to swap kit and change in the street between performances so these can now be purchased for all the dancers. The event has raised more than £600 in total so far and I have been delighted with the support of local people, including tourism businesses and council staff."
People enjoying the launch were also treated to a slice of the spectacular country stile cake made by Iced of Garstang and biscuits shaped as walking boots made by staff at The Priory, Scorton. The first walk of the festival was led by volunteers Mike Coleran and Jean Fone along the riverside path to the Millennium Green and back.
Guests to the launch also found out about the special walks on offer this year which are celebrating International Year of Biodiversity.
