Dream on, we're off to Wembley

Kirkham and Wesham FC have booked their place in the final of the FA Carlsberg Vase having won the Semi-Final, Second Leg played at Bloomfields the home ground of Needham Market FC

Kirkham and Wesham boss Mick Fuller admitted that reaching The FA Vase Final at Wembley is the stuff of fairytales after watching his side edge past Needham Market 4-2 on aggregate.

Kirkham will now face Lowestoft Town on the hallowed turf at Wembley on May 11 following a 1-0 win at Bloomfields.

'Its a Peter Pan story,' confessed Fuller.

'The FA Vase has been such an incredible journey and I would like to thank everybody associated with the club.

'It is a dream for every footballer to play at Wembley and, for amateurs, the opportunities are few and far between,' he continued.

“So to lead this side out at Wembley will surpass everything I achieved as a player. I just wish I could turn the clock back twenty years and be playing in the match myself.”

Fuller’s side were defending a 3-2 advantage from the first leg, and Matt Walwyn netted the crucial late goal to put the tie beyond a battling Needham Market.

But the hosts were indebted to goalkeeper Liam Jones who pulled of a string of fine saves to keep his side in the tie.

Nathan Szyszlyk thought he had bought Needham a lifeline when he slotted home on 71 minutes, only to have his effort ruled offside.

But Walwyn, who also scored in the first leg, came back to haunt the home side as he rolled the ball into an empty net to win the tie for the Lancashire based team.

Fuller would not be drawn on his side's chances of victory at Wembley but believes they have every chance of glory.

“All I will say we have the players with the capability," he said

"And, on the day, it is how we perform. We will go to Wembley, enjoy the occasion and hopefully, you never know, it may just happen.”
