Ben Fogle Fan Of Blackpool Zoo
Blackpool Zoo is celebrating a 900 per cent increase in visitors signing up for annual memberships in the past 12 months.
In January 2009 the figure stood at 300 and the final head count in the same month this year was 3,000 and rising.
As a result, the zoo is planning to launch a series of members-only events throughout 2010, which started this month.
Yearly figures from the Education Department also showed that a staggering 45,000 students took part in academic activities from January 09 to January 10.
The news came as the zoo found out it had made the shortlist for both the Visit Blackpool Awards and the BIBAs (Be Inspired Business Awards, Lancashire).
Last year saw a record year for the Blackpool attraction, with visitor numbers up by 17 per cent and an overall revenue increase of 20 per cent.
Darren Webster, Managing Director at Blackpool Zoo, said: "Our on-going investment programme and high profile marketing and PR campaigns have really paid off and we aren't planning to take our foot off the accelerator in the near future.
"The huge success of the half a million pound investment in a new penguin pool was followed quickly by a similar commitment to completely revamping our sealion enclosure, which will be unveiled in April this year.
"Our marketing and PR efforts are set to continue in earnest and our social media marketing is proving very popular. We have more than 1,600 fans on Facebook now and our followers on Twitter include BBC News and Ben Fogle.
Other recent investments at the zoo include a new Wallaby Walkthrough, which will be officially opened in Summer, and a refurbished Children's Zoo.
