Cardboard Collection

This was the first week of the cardboard collection in our area, and I was extremely surprised to see that we now have three visits from the Refuse Collection lorry.  The first takes the garden waste.  The second the bottles and cans and the third the paper and cardboard.

Recycling is not just about re-using resources, but also in using them efficiently in the first instance.  Are the benefits of separating the card from the garden waste being lost with the increase in fuel required to make the additional collection.

There is also concern around costs

Re: Cardboard Collection

The changes to the cardboard collection scheme have been necessary due to the requirements of the new Lancashire County Council waste treatment facility in Thornton which cannot accept cardboard for the composting process.

The kersider vehicles used to collect the recyclables do not have sufficient capacity to accept another material (cardboard) and consequently we have had to increase the number of vehicles collecting from each property.  In order to keep costs down the Council has reorganised the collection rounds to utilise existing vehicles for the cardboard collections.  We are now using three vehicles to collect the materials but they are only going to the tip once instead of twice as before; this negates any increase in fuel as the vehicles are not doubling back.  We are also currently trialing a 'spilt body' vehicle that collects paper and card in one side and glass, cans and plastic in the other and will be looking to replace the existing vehicles with these once the kerbsiders have come to the end of their useful life.

Re: Cardboard Collection

It's nice that the cardboard recycling is working but why, when I left out glass in one bag and my plastic in another, the glass was taken but the plastic was left on my drive?

Re: Cardboard Collection

Hi Drea, the only reason I can think of is due to the bags not being clear. Due to an accident where a recycling operative put his hand into a bag and caused injury we only allow then to to pick up clear bags of recycling.

If you want to report a missed collection please use the link below and we will arrange for your recycling to be picked up.

Re: Cardboard Collection

My personal feeling is that if you make recycling too much of a chore people will simply not do it!
There is a fine line between helping people to recycle and making the process of recycling too time consuming.

Ah right, I used bin bags.  Now can someone tell me where I can get clear bin bags from please?  It would have been nice if we were informed rather than it all just left on the drive.  Or perhaps they can wear protective gloves?

I agree with Dave_N.  We're doing our best to try and recycle and yet another reason has been given not to collect it.

Does anyone remember the days when 'bin men' would actually walk up your drive, carry your dusbtin down the drive, empty it for you and bring it back again?  Now it seems we have to do everything for them!  Let's hope no-one gets a papercut from the cardboard or we're really snookered!

well said Drea!

We do seem to be doing most of their work for them!
Imagine if todays bin men had to actually pick something up...health & safety would go nuts!
Bin days are always fun for me...I have a new pastime called 'Find my wheelie bin'.

As for the clear bin bags - where do we get these from?
I wouldn't want to risk a bin man hurting himself by asking him to do what he is paid for!

Oh cynical me!

Re: Cardboard Collection

OK, I found a flyer stuck under my grey bin lid this morning to tell me that any excess recyling should be left in 'an open carrier bag'.  All well and good until the wind gets up and depostist the recycling all over the road, which is then left because the bin men won't take it because it's not in a bag or a box!!!!  Still no word on the clear bin bags Dave though I think I do have an answer as to how we can get the bin men to take the recycling...just put it in the grey bin with all the other rubbish!

Re: Cardboard Collection

Hi Drea,

By clear I mean not black bin bags, normal supermarket bags are fine for putting extra recyclables in (I appreciate my comments didn’t make that clear at all).

If it’s practical order additional containers from the council.

I can’t help with the wind issue; I wish I could as it would make cycling to work a lot easier.

Re: Cardboard Collection

Andy, thank you for your reply.  Another snag regarding the recycling in carrier bags...not all of us use them.  I've just checked my 'carrier bag stash' and have 3.  Reason?  We are constantly barraged with messages telling us to use reuseable carriers and can now have our shopping delivered without carrier bags.  I really don't think the council have thought this one through very well!

I shall go and order extra contatiners.  Thank you
